World's Top New Year's Eve Concert List !!

Yo... I've assembled a darn near definitive list of New Year's Eve Concerts going on around the globe...

It took many hours of detailed web searches & list scanning to create a quasi-comprehensive guide to whose doing what on New Year's eve in various musical genres across the globe...

So here's my latest updated selections featuring some sorta alphabetically organized events going on in live music as we roll the calendar over into 2006 ... indeed, I am surprised to announce it, but this is about the most complete list of NYE's concerts available anywhere, at least that that I know of...

I combed many multiple news sources, foreign & domestic databases, stray spam emails, dead links ad nauseum , all just to get this inane info to ya.

...and even with my selectivity meter in full effect, i declare that neither Pollstar, Ticketmaster, Google, MySpace or any of yer fave mags or papers is gonna have close to any of this info all in one place to scan with yer peepers...

Maybe ya can't get in to any of 'em, but at least ya know what's going on and where yer faves are at...

Laptop Mac & Cheese Mix

It twas a long weekend for me that began in a bar on a Thursday night, hopped into other bars, networked and headed out into a last call , an intervention of sorts at a retirement party that wasn't, and with lil' hands, and the 101, extended well into Friday morn with much mayhem & pre dawn laptop rocking as I tried to lay down some scratch vocals on a new insane screamo composistion in Mac-a-delic software with some fellow combatants... we did at least master the fade...

and I belive Howard Stern was there...or at least people that couldn't stop talking about him...

...
and somehow there was Crab & Asparagus soup and a sopping wet weekend just continued wandering wily & wicked as Southern Culture was on The Skids again, but I wasn't,

and it all stretched into a series of drunken stuporific moments, that included a strip club xmas party where the ex-mayor cavorted with a murderer and presented his pinky, I ate much cracked Dungeoness crab dripping with butter, and spent some some sort of sordid smoking moment in an alley off Polk St with a Randy midwesterner who praised a land of Karaoke opportunity,

and I believe it all officially ended after much Fernet, Khalua, Beer, Vodka, Chartreuse and limping about when I finally left that same bar circa 3:30 am this morn in a cab...

and i think I left my cheese there...

some darn good Mike's Firehouse Cheddar in fact ...

maybe if I go back, it will still be there... hmmm... sounds risky...

anyhow...no matter if I get my cheese back, this might be my last post for awhile, so we'll try to stuff yer stocking wiff some tunes to get ya through the holly daze...

first up, a classic for all seasons... but particularly this one...

Oscar The Grouch - I Hate Christmas

As a final Xmess moment, we'll throw in a couple more hipster holiday hits just to clean out the collection for those of ya that ain't had yer fill yet ...

Beatles - 1969 Fan Club Christmas Single

Clearlake - I Wonder If The Snow Will Settle ( Ben Hiller Remix )

Donny Hathaway - This Christmas

Ella Fitzgerald - We Wish You A Merry Christmas

then we'll take ya to the special voyeuristic peek into the "under covers" lounge for a brief visit...

Butch Walker - My Best Friend's Girl ( Cars cover)

Capt. Sensible -
Happy Talk ( Rodgers And Hammerstein cover )

Ivy -
Let's Go To Bed ( Cure cover)

Gypsy Kings -
Hotel California ( Eagles Cover )

Nickel Creek - Toxic ( Britney Spears cover )

Sublime -
Smoke Two Joints ( Toyes cover )

then we let ya get trapped in a random jukebox mix o' mayhem with an orgy of original artists in no particular order, or particular genre, god or even belief system of orderly blog posting...

Apsci - Tirade Highway (Instrumental)

Architecture In Helsinki -
Potrero Hill

Chemical Bros. -
Galvanize feat Q - Tip

Children of Bodom -
Living Dead Beat

Children of Bodom - Trashed, Lost & Strungout

Corrosion of Conformity - Intervention

Death Cab For Cutie -
Transatlanticism

Dennis Leary - Asshole Song

Gang of Four -
Anthrax ( Blood Bros. remix)

J.F.A -
We Know You Suck

MDC - John Wayne Was A Nazi

Operation Ivy - Sound System

People Under The Stairs - Code Check

Takuma Itoi - Microbe

Tom Waits - Chocolate Jesus

Wall of Voodoo - Mexican Radio

Wolf Parade -
Shine A Light

anyhow, dig the music... or at least what you wanna dig,

my advice to you is : avoid saturated fats, and statuatory rape

partake little of aspartame or most any part of ghee...

stay outta trouble, and for starters ...
don't do anything I would...

but I'm now outta here, yer on yer own , as I'm done tinkering with the soldering iron, and now I gotta go try and get some X mess shopping done on crutches, and visit with my smarty pants niece...

cheers & beers, Lil Mike in San Francisco

Meanwhile across several ponds:

Orgainizers have announced that the "United Sounds of All Tommorrow's Parties " festival will take place 60 miles outside London near the White Cliffs of Dover in East Sussex on two consecutive weekends in spring 2006, first May 12-14 and then May 19-21. Each day will feature a different curator for the festival's six total days. Mudhoney, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Devandra Banhart will curate the first weekend, while the second weekend will be headed by the Shins, Sleater-Kinney, and the recently confirmed Dinosaur Jr., who are replacing the previously announced Ween.

Tickets run £125 per weekend, and the event will start with Mudhoney who have announced their choices for the May 12 opening performances:

  • Black Mountain
  • Comets on Fire
  • the Drones
  • the Scientists
  • Country Teasers
  • David Dondero

For May 13th, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have chosen:

  • TV on the Radio
  • Liars
  • Ex Models
  • Blood Brothers
  • Celebration
  • Imaginary Folk
  • the Tall Boys

Closing down the first weekend on May 14 will be Devandra Banhart's choices:

  • Espers
  • Vetiver
  • Jana Hunter
  • Bat for Lashes
  • Metallic Falcons

The second weekend isn't finalized yet, but Friday will feature The Shins and the New Pornographers. Saturday May 20 will include curator's Sleater-Kinney, plus the Gossip, as well as MC David Cross .

  • after several posts of Xmess related stuff...

I offer some non Holiday related MP3'z I want ya to check out if ya have time + bountiful bandwidth, and delightfully decadent disc space...

There's always room for the elegant delivery of Ms. Simone, who arose from her meager beginnings as Eunice Waymon, the 6th of 7 children in a poor family in Tryon, North Carolina. Her talent was obvious, and she managed to get to New York's renowned Juilliard School of Music, and to send money back home from her gigs as a classical accompanist. Soon she was singing more earthy material in taverns, and on then in 1957 on records from the Bethlehem label.

Indeed this track from 1968, shows that she knows how to work what she's got...

Nina Simone - I Got Life

Peter Noone and the fellas were a British invasion band that sold millions upon millions of records and Cashbox magazine twice named them "Entertainers Of The Year". They were somewhat of an influence on The Ramones, being one of Joey's favorite bands, and here on their first hit, they seem to realize they are onto something and they ain't afraid to let us know...

    Herman's Hermits - I'm Into Something Good

    ---------------------

Here's a special version of a classic Atlantic Records cut from circa 1962 for y'all from an artist that Kevin Spacey was apparently quite fond of... with Spacey going so far as to wait years and finally fund his own bio-pic of the late crooner...

Bobby Darin - Splish Splash w/ intro narration

This song was written for Brecht & Weill's Three Penny Opera of the Weimar Period of post World War One Germany, and later became an unlikely chart topper for Darin. The hit version was recorded in December of 1958, and it went #1 for 9 weeks in 1959. This is a live mix from a performance at the legendary Copacabana nightclub in New York in June of 1960, the live album was released on ATCO in the fall, went to #1 and stayed on the charts for 38 weeks.

Bobby Darin - Mack The Knife

    -----------------

Here's a different kind of spacey fave

This Nile Rogers & Bernard Edwards of Chic production was a top ten hit circa 1980 across the dancefloors of Europe, it charted in the US briefly in the lower echelons, but for some reason Sheila never won the hearts and minds of the post-disco "uh-murkin" masses... She was a ( bonus check out her Spacey vid clip )

Sheila & The Black Devotion - Spacer

As long as we're talking space, why not allow Mr. Spock to sing a tune for June

Leonard Nimoy - I Walk The Line

Nowhere but up lately for this act, from their 2003 album, those then Barsuk-ian boys lay down a little number for ya all...

Death Cab For Cutie - Tiny Vessels

Son of the great rock n roll pioneer Johnny Otis, Shuggie put this out into obscurity in the early 70's but the chart action didn't come until the Brothers Johnson mined it at the height of the disco era... Here's the original from the Luaka Bop re-release in 2002.

Shuggie Otis - Strawberry Letter 23

Another longtime artist brought into the limelight about the same time under the auspices of the aforementioned label operated by David Byrne was Tom Ze'. This Brazilian madcap musician was involved with the amazingly great Beatles influenced Os Mutantes back in the 1960's and continues to produce bizarre and quirky tunes with a socio-political Dada esque perspective sung mostly in Portugese...

    Tom Ze - Curiosidade

    Tom Ze- Xiqueque

here's some stuff from Os Mutantes, the psychedelic tropicalia group that Tom Ze' worked with a bit on some fairly obscure recordings that I'd say are well worth seeking out...

Os Mutantes - Panis Et Circenses

    Os Mutantes - Bat Macumba

    Os Mutantes - Baby

This track I found at poptones features Os Mutantes with one of the tropicalia movements founders who returned to revolutionize Brazilian pop after studying with electronic music pioneers Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez.

Rogerio Duprat w/ Os Mutantes - Lady Madonna

The image “http://static.flickr.com/33/52163200_66dbfe3942_o.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Here's a track featuring Gilberto Gil recorded on a Brazilain TV show circa 1969 that was posted at Audium.Blogspot.Com

Os Mutantes - Domingo no Parque (w/Gilberto Gil)

Another cursory examination of the web has just alerted me that fellow MP3 blogger DiddyWah has recently annointed us with more Tom Ze' & Mutantes material as well

    anyhow... i gotta get going...

y'all should have plenty to follow up on

there'll be a quiz next time, so do yer frickin homework sheesh !

    Seasonal Tales of Good Tidings

Here's Some Examples of Seasonal Stories Of Goodwill That Make My Holiday Heart Glow Warmer...

ex. The Shady Military Contractor Who Sold The U.S Marines Thousands of Faulty Protective Vests, And Spent 10 Million Dollars of the dough on his daughter's Bat Mitzvah, replete with Kenny G ($250,000) , 50 Cent ( $500,000), Aerosmith ( $2 Million), as well as Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, and last month's Random Revelations featured Democratic fundraising star Don Henley .

ex. While the murder rate skyrockets to almost a hundred dead in our hood this year, the SFPD produces a video project that gets 20 officers suspended that the mayor proudly calls "shameful. ..offensive...sexist...homophobic...racist"

ex.To Prove It Is The Season of Charitable Giving, Congress Grants Even More Tax Cuts For Rich Investors !!

ex. Plus, Why Stop There, When We Can Have More Patriot Act For Everyone, w/ Extended Run By Popular Congessional Demand !!

The Justice Department is offering money to schools that have students wear RFID tags to track their whereabouts

So anyhow, I ain't got anything clever or ironic or succinct to add , since just reading all that stuff sorta took the seasonal sarcasm right out from under my tree...

    hmm

Here, I leave it to you, you go and get linked up with a mess of just early enuf sonic X-mess gifts. There's just enuf time to get some use out em before you have to put em away in the closet with all the lights & spoiled eggnog cartons...

So go joyously fill your speakers & lighten up your holiday hub bub til yer festive froth runneth over...

    • John Denver and the Muppets - Silent Night, Holy Night.mp3

    • Muppets - Jingle Bells Jingle Bell Rock.mp3

    • Tenchi Muyo - Jingle Bells

    • Trey & Matt of South Park - It's Xmas

    • Los Texas Wranglers - Los Noche Before Christmas
    • Robert Earl Keen - Merry Christmas From the Family

    • Steve Martin - 5 Christmas Wishes

    • If I had one wish that I could wish this holiday season, it would be that all the children to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace. If I had two wishes I could make this holiday season, the first would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing in the spirit of harmony and peace. And the second would be for 30 million dollars a month to be given to me, tax-free in a Swiss bank account. You know, if I had three wishes I could make this holiday season, the first, of course, would be for all the children of the world to get together and sing, the second would be for the 30 million dollars every month to me, and the third would be for encompassing power over every living being in the entire universe. And if I had four wishes that I could make this holiday season, the first would be the crap about the kids definitely, the second would be for the 30 million, the third would be for all the power, and the fourth would be to set aside one month each year to have an extended 31-day orgasm, to be brought out slowly by Rosanna Arquette and that model Paulina-somebody, I can't think of her name. Of course my lovely wife can come too and she's behind me one hundred percent here, I guarantee it. Wait a minute, maybe the sex thing should be the first wish, so if I made that the first wish, because it could all go boom tomorrow, then what do you got, y'know? No, no, the kids, the kids singing would be great, that would be nice. But wait a minute, who am I kidding? They're not going to be able to get all those kids together. I mean, the logistics of the thing is impossible, more trouble than it's worth! So -- we reorganize! Here we go. First, the sex thing. We go with that. Second, the money. No, we got with the power second, then the money. And then the kids. Oh wait, oh jeez, I forgot about revenge against my enemies! Okay, I need revenge against all my enemies, they should die like pigs in hell! That would be my fourth wish. And, of course, my fifth wish would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace. Thank you everybody and Merry Christmas.

    Stumblin' Towards X-Mess

    hey it's me...

hope yer all havin' a happy holiday entry way... as we boil down to the big year end rear end...

for me it's all about the humanity of it all...

ex. I just watched a video of chinese soldiers carefully executing pre-screened prisoners whose organs can be sold to donors...a $5000 dollar deposit can get ya a kidney on reserve, about $30,000 for the whole operation etc

hey, if ya wanna save some lives, ya gotta take some lives right?

...not sure what a liver is going for...but i'lll see if I can reserve ya one...

I'm still limpin' round w/ crutches...made it to work ...

today's mission included bulk erasing a buncha tapes of parole hearings...sad but true...

anyhow...since I'm in a cast, and spent my Sunday Morning trying to bail a 125 lb female friend out of jail who was senselessly and severly beaten til bloody & bruised & then dragged by the hair by cops who didn't like that she was standing in the wrong line outside a disco...

Ward Churchill - "In a Pig's Eye: Reflections on the Police State"

Guess, we'll call it an evil Christmas so far...might as well start with that notion...

here's some more of yer audio presents for the holidaze...

    Ladytron - Evil Xmas Mix

DJ John's - Christmassacre of Charlie Brown

Rock n Roll Geek - Xmas Song

Sesame Street's The Count - Let It Snow

    Jimmy McGriff -
Santa Claus is Coming to Town

    hmmm

at MotorCityRock.com I found a cover track from a rawkin' Detroit band in the 1980's, ( a decade which according to the website has been over for at least 5818 days last i checked...).

Goober & The Peas - Snoopy's Christmas featuring Ernie Harwell, the original singer of Snoopy & The Red Baron
    -----------------------
these fellers can sure crank up an ol' fashioned & fevered lil' storm, so here's more of em...

    Goober & the Peas

They did such a nice job on the holiday Snoopy & The Red Baron number I decided to throw in a couple more from their shockingly obscure rock & roll ouvre....

first the socially relevant 80's masterpiece

Goober & The Peas - Killing Is Bad

plus a bonus track of their stunning interpretation from a 1992 Pravda records compilation of Jimmy Webb's classic

Goober & The Peas - Mac Arthur Park

    -------------------------------

hmmm what next ? I'll just throw some general junque du jour in your direction, maybe lemme know what ya liked...
    -----------------------

Now, I bet yer wondering ...why did I put some whiny weirdo Icelandic jazz disco queen named Bjork after that rawkin' blast ... well uh,
    because I can... that's why

Bjork - Hidden Place ( matmos mix)

    Tipsy -
    Kitty's Daydream (Longhair mix)

Nina Simone - House Of The Rising Sun

    Aesop Rock -
    Basic Cable

    anyhow

that should be enuf tuneage to tide ya over til tomorrow... or whenever i get my shit together to say hello again...

keep those cards and letters coming... tis the season...to be jolly, blah blah blah

here's some of what got heard round these parts last week:

David Cassisy & Partridge Family - My Christmas Card to You

here's some more "secular" tunes for ya to enjoy:

From his "Water from The Wells of Home" collaborative album, recorded in the late 80's for Mercury whom he was feuding with, shortly before he was unceremoniously dropped. The writer of the track is the great Appalachian songsmith Tom T. Hall , who joins Johnny on this number.

Water from the Wells of Home (Bonus Tracks)

Johnny Cash - Last of The Drifters

raised in D.C, where Go-Go rules the streets, Amerie uses the local beat to her advantage on this tune

    Amerie - 1 Thing

This song uses a sample from a 1965 Jagger/Richards composistion called "The Last Time" from an old Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra recording that unfortunately for the Verve was controlled by Allen B. Klein ( aka ABKCO). The Verve recorded the track before they negotiated the sample, and the price for getting their first real hit on the charts was an exhorbitant fee to Klein that the writers themselves eventually apologized for. Upset that he lost the royalties, Verve singer Richard Ashcroft was quoted saying Bittersweet Symphony was "The best song Jagger and Richards have written in 20 years." Here's the song without "Where Are They Now" file entry Richard Ashcroft bleating over the top...
