Wacky Dust

A teenager coming from an unstable homelife, in 1934 young Ella Fitzgerald ends up living on the streets of NY, and wins a talent contest at The Apollo Theater. She hooks up with hunchbacked drummer Chick Webb, who becomes her legal guardian and by the late 30's she spends a total of six years fronting Webb's band, based outta Harlem's Savoy Ballroom. Webb dies of heart attack in '39, Ella continues leading his band until 1942, and then goes on to a storied career becoming America's "first lady of song"... Here she is recording a naughty lil' nightclub fave for Decca long before the many awards and accolades came pouring in...

" Wacky Dust"

(composers : Stanley Adams & Oscar Levant)

They call it wacky dust
It's from a hot cornet
It gives your feet a feeling so breezy
And oh, it's so easy to get

They call it wacky dust
It brings a dancing jag
And once it starts, then only a
Sap'll refuse to Big Apple or Shag

Oh I don't know just why
It gets you so high
Putting a buzz in you heart
You'll do a marathon
You'll wanna go on
Kickin' the ceilin' apart

They call it wacky dust
It's something you can't trust
And in the end the rhythm will stop
When it does, then you'll drop
From happy wacky dust

[Instrumental]

Oh we don't know just why
It gets you so high
Putting a buzz in you heart
You'll do a marathon
You'll wanna go on
Kickin' the ceilin' apart

They call it wacky dust
It's something you can't trust
And in the end the rhythm will stop
When it does, then you'll drop
From happy wacky dust
