I Don't Know If Anyone Noticed, But I

I don't know if anyone noticed, but I have been refraining from my usual pattern of rhetorical ranting lately...

I used to open up a newspaper or the days headlines on the interweb and just get all riled up about the state of things & spew some vitriol...

This started with me in earnest after Katrina rolled through a year ago and we saw just how bad things had gotten here in the states...

Not only are billions of dollars raked out of the hard working paws of the working classes each year in governemntal taxes, fees & fines... but god forbid you should need some assistance from that same government.

Seems our leaders are so busy spending our money like drunken sailors overseas, nary a rescue copter is available stateside to help out here.

We've all seen & heard about our so called Congressional "leadership", who spend 8 months a year fund raising for the few finite hours they sit in session trying to sneak in legislation benefitting pathetic pet projects of their patrons.

Then there's that brain addled president & his top advisor Rumsfeld...

Not only are the so full of sh%t that rooms clear whenever they open their lying mouths, they still think if the say it you believe it. Bush recently held one of the most in articulate press conferences in the history of the office, and claimed he never questions anyones patriotism who questions him...and then a few days later his boy Rummy has the gall to compare the administration's critics to Nazi appeasers?
hoo boy...
Neil Young - Let's Impeach The President

I, like anyone else I suppose, get a lil' distracted...

especially now with so many nutcase stories in the news these days, it's hard to no where to start.

Here in the Bay Area we have a plethora of fruits & nuts to pick from... not just in the governemnt either.
I mean sure you got your occasional transvestite on the planning commission, and random weirdos elected to various offices.. but the streets are full of em too...

Yesterday I suppose you heard about our disgruntled Afghani idiot who steamrolled his SUV through San Francisco attempting to kill as many pedestrians as possible. I'm not sure if it was a personal jihad, or just an a$$hole making a name for himself.

Can't wait to read his tell all book...

Maybe he was jealous of all the attention the moronic "mainstream" media was showing John Michael Karr, the former Petaluma based pedophile who admitted to accidentally killing Jon Benet Ramsey... even though he had never even been anywhere near her, either dead or alive.

On top of those big headline stories, there's plenty of disturbing sidebars to keep me nauseous ...

Most of them are urban crime reports, little shocking murders here and there that just keep spiraling out of control, and painting a sad portrait of our youth and the times we live...

egads...

here's some that are sticking in my cerebellum as I write...

On Monday, the first day of school in Richmond north of Berkeley, a gang related shooting incident near a school playground erupted at recess in front of a local elementary school where 250 some students were playing outside. Some bullets were discovered penetrating classroom walls...miraculously, no one was hurt. Suspects still at large...

At 10 am on Monday in Oakland, a couple were talking, when a man approached , shot & killed them both in broad daylight on 78th Avenue. The woman had just dropped her 4 year old at off for the first day of school. Suspect still at large...

Yesterday, also in Oakland, some 50 something year old unemployed former cable installer felt "disrespected" shot & killed a guy who had not paid him $30 owed to him for working on his cable. Maybe due to his "maturity", this guy turned himself in...

I recently read a tragedy about a 20 something guy with 3 jobs who was training to become a pilot, who was shot multiple times & paralyzed by the multiple bullet wounds after an incident in an Oakland barbershop because he simply asked a belligerant creep to stop hitting on his girlfriend... At least they got the suspect in this one
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Leave My Girl Alone

Turns out the shooter is a felon of some renown, having previously been charged with murder, but of course those charges were dropped. Ironically the girlfriend with whom he's been hiding out, works at the county jail...she met him there when he was visting some other incarcerated character a few months ago. Ah, true love... Oakland style.

Gotta love Oakland, with it's high quality of civil servants, where it appears particularly bad this year. There's just shy of 100 overall homicides as we enter the 9th month of 2006, a total now exceeding all committed in 2005. Bad parenting skills, governmental neglect, poor schools, ignorance, poverty, drugs, hopelessness, evil...whatever you wanna call it, the effects are in full effect here...

Oakland has also seen a 31 percent hike in aggravated assaults — including an almost doubled number of shootings — and a 41 percent overall increase in robberies. On Tuesday alone, there were 12 reported robberies in Oakland, including one where the victim was shot in the foot, and two carjackings according to police.

Of the 95 dead so far this year as I write , 60 of those killed were under age 25, almost 20 were under age 17...

A 16 year old high school football hopeful recently had his life taken during a random shooting outside a pre-season "party"...

In another sad but true tale, last week a 14 year old latino kid was killed outside a Quincenera party in Oakland when his 15 year old friend "accidentally" shot him while "playing" with a 9mm hand gun in a parked car. At first the guilty party told cops some local "gangsters" did it, but further questioning revealed that the gun was given to him for safe keeping by some other unnamed individual I assume is still at large...

Yesterday I saw that cops finally apprehended a white trash tweaker father, mother, son & daughter team that lived in a camper & went about armed robbing, stealing cars, pistol whipping and menacing various stores in the greater Oakland area for almost a year. When police finallly caught them, the mother wasn't arrested because even though she was complicit, she had an alibi as being in the trailer and taking care of the family baby... The mother is still at the trailer under the freeway, while the rest of the family is in jail, and the child is now in custody CPS. Said the half toothed Mom on the local news " I guess they done some bad things, I tole 'em to stop..."
To my own fault, I have been reading the Oakland paper more often lately on my way to work, but the crimes these are not restricted to the East Bay...

ex. There were 5 slayings alone last Sunday in SF, via 3 supposedly unrelated shootings, all in the Hunters Point area... One involved a 33 year old criminal who killed a couple in their car, but as their car rolled out of control, it hit the killer's vehicle where his 34 year old disabled accomplice waited. While struggling to get the accomplice into his wheelchair, Police arrived at the collision site and the suspect opened fire. The suspect was killed, the guy in the wheelchair is being held.

anyhow...

I refuse to dwell in that painful sort of cell, (even if some people do belong in one)...

my real focus here has always been focusing on annointing the miniscule masses that pass through these links with some varied tunes...

Whether they be old or new.. I tend to try to have a lil' something just for you ...
Gernado - Stop The Violence (Reggaeton Mix)

Today's next find has some East Bay roots, and is a recent signing to the Quanuum label, and a somewhat curious one at that...

Normally that label is a bastion of experimental indie hip hop beats, but here is something altogether of a different style...

I think it will work out, cuz the band has a definite sensibility that may surprise fans of the label, but may just please fans of pop & some radio programmers.

I started listening & saw the name Bart Davenport in the credits, and then it all started coming together in my head...

Holy Maroon Cocoon Batman!

He's a long time Bay Area music maker, this Loved One has trolled for a hit so long he just might be playing out a modern rock n roll version of Hemingway's the old man & the sea...

But leave it to that crafty hook wielding Bart to finally catch a tide before he lost his hair... good timing dude...

I think you'll hear a bit of the ol' Squeeze sound in this track...and one hipster suggestion made to me by their able PR staff is that there's some sorta Gnarls Barkley thang going on...

hmmm
but maybe a lil something else too...

you decide

Honeycut - Shadows

Bart's known for his mod bluesy work with his 90's rock outfits, got funky as the vocalist on a 2004 DJ greyboy disc, but on solo outings he shows some unashamed appreciation of soppy seventies pop, and effete balladeering...

The band also features RV Salters (aka General Electriks) so y'know it's got plenty of willy nilly moderne influences going on. Salters has collborated on stuff by Femi Kuti, and Blackalicious as well as his own stuff. In fact it was apparently Blackalicious’ Chief Xcel who brought Honeycut to the attention of the Quanuum label.

I'll be catching these guys either at the Rock & Soul extravaganza in Oakland on Sept 2nd on the Live 105 stage, or at the Quanuum showcase at Mezzanine in SF on Sept 28th... looks like a solid bill there too...

Maybe if yer in the hood, you should check em out too...

  • Sept 25th The Showcase is at The House of Blues San Diego

  • Sept 27th Knitting Factory in Hollywood CA

  • Sept 28th in SF

I thought I'd drop just one or two more related cuts to get ya spiced up for that Quannuum west coast showcase tour in the near future. Also featured on the bill is Curumin, the Brazilian born bad azzz who has been making some headway in this country since his release last year on Quanuum.

Achados E Perdidos
He's got skills, and while he also digging Run DMC as a kid was trained in Sao Paolo and playing gigs with some of the greats of Brazilian music. Expect some Samba infused tropicalia flava with yer modern urban dance floor friendly grooves. This cut is one I posted last year... but since you likely slept on it.. here it is again y'all
